DOSIRAD Company  /  its products

DOSIRAD is a small independent company, created in March 1993 to pursue the production and sales of the "nuclear films" developed by Kodak-Pathé France, over 20 years ago. Its director, Jean ANDRU*, is the engineer who was in charge of these products, at Kodak-Pathé.

* after a long time of work in radon world, Jean ANDRU retired and DOSIRAD bought by french firm CARSO - chemical laboratories holding -, has got a new team with Frédéric Sarradin & Flavien Boudet.

DOSIRAD is the world's exclusive supplier for the following products. Films are sold directly from France, while radon products (KODALPHA and DOSIFILM) are mainly sold through local distributors. Example in India, the only country where we have an exclusive film distributor.

1-   Special nuclear films, based on Kodak technology, for recording ionising particles (alpha, proton, heavy ions, etc.) and neutrons.

One such film, the LR115, is still used by numerous researchers, around the world, for more than 20 years. DOSIRAD sells these films, directly from France. Our "Export Price List", in EURO, is valid worldwide. It gives the list of the available films, their formats (sheets or rolls) as well as their prices and sales conditions. The background of the welcome page shows the LR115 film, under microscope, after etching of the alpha tracks, in a soda solution. Alpha tracks are clear holes while small scratches and dust would appear black. So, when everything is well done, the counting results are very accurate, despite of rather simple counting softwares.

2 - attente micro image ...  A small passive radon dosimeter, called KODALPHA (also called DOSALPHA).

It has the size of a credit card and is especially design for natural radioactivity measurements and detection of all kinds of buildings at radon risk. Since 1987, the French IRSN had used them for the French radon map. For more information, instruction sheet and prices, please click on dosimeters.

Developed by Kodak-Pathé, these dosimeters are based on the use of our LR115 film, associated with our high-tech, industrial analysis laboratory. These small dosimeters are so easy to ship, that they are the only ones, which can be used all over the world and yet still be analysed by our dedicated French laboratory. They are recognised and approved in several countries, for more than 10 years. For instance, have a look to the results of the validation tests in England, every 6 months, over the 13 last years. If needed, ask us for the professional Price List of the KODALPHA and DOSIFILM.

We also accept some direct purchase orders of KODALPHA detectors from non-professionals and from any countries. Then the French prices of the KODALPHA detectors are applied. But, the cost of the freight is added to these French prices. Up to 10, the KODALPHA detectors are simply sent into large envelopes. Under regular envelopes, it costs almost nothing to return the films to our analyses laboratory.

3-      Pillboxes of numbered films, called DOSIFILM.

These films are exclusively sold to radon professionals, in pillboxes of 100 films. Like for the above KODALPHA, all the films analyses are included in their prices. Please, have a look to the main principle of use of these pillboxes of DOSIFILM films. But, these films can be used in several ways. Please, have also a look to the pictures of these different uses, on the DOSIFILM page (not yet in English, sorry !).

Please, contact us to get the whole professional price list of DOSIFILM and KODALPHA.

To keep all the advantages of this new radon testing approach, all the cups (opened or closed types) have to be re-used. Only the films are sent back to our analysis lab. Then, the DOSIFILM allows making radon measurements for the cheapest prices of the market.

These DOSIFILM films can be used as well as "open" or "closed" radon detectors. They have only to be used in the following "open" or "closed" cases :

  1- "Open" detectors :

DOSIRAD proposes a very simple "open case". Each DOSIFILM film is inserted into a re-usable KODALPHA lid, just before starting the radon measurement. Then, the lids are simply stuck to any surface, by a double-side adhesive tape. This allows discreet radon measures (ex. under tables, etc.) for the best price of the market. This discreet way of doing avoids the lost or degradation of dosimeters. Only the films have to be sent back to our lab for films analyses, in regular envelopes. From which, an overall very low cost.

2-  "Closed" detectors :   (some pictures of the following closed detectors are available on the French part of this web site).

DOSIRAD proposes also alternative closed detectors, to be used with the DOSIFILM pills of films.

2-1- The first one is a large "calibrated goblet". A DOSIFILM film is inserted into a KODALPHA lid (as above), but this lid is stuck inside a calibrated goblet. This has been developed to get the very precise "closed measures" that are needed for "EF" assessments. Ask us about this "EF" method. It is based on two simultaneous measurements, one opened and one closed. Since the opened ones measure "radon + progenies" and the closed ones measure only radon, the difference between both gives the progenies, that is "EF". In 2003, such "goblets" had successfully passed 5 international blind tests, in USA, Israel, Germany, Switzerland and the European Intercomparison of the NRPB. Calibrations curves are available on request :  EF versus the ratio "open measure" / "closed measure".

2-2- The second case is a small glass vial. A DOSIFILM film is introduced in a re-usable glass-vial, just before use. The film is removed at the end of exposure. This very new approach has been especially developed for countries were only closed detectors are allowed by the legislation. The glass vial's look is very new in the motionless radon world. But, they give excellent results and are now approved in Switzerland and Israel. As already said, only the films have to be sent back for analysis. Like for the above uses of the DOSIFILM, the "glass vials" are more designed for the professionals who place themselves their detectors. The "glass vial" method leads to a lot of practical advantages, including a very low cost. Some pictures of the "glass vials" and "goblets" are available on the French part of this web site.

2-3- The third case is a "foldable" cubic case, called RADBOX. After several blind tests, it is now approved and used in Switzerland. It is the only closed radon detector of the market, able to be sent in small envelopes !  Again, a picture is available on the French pages of this web site. Please, ask us for details.

2-4- The last one but not the least ! Due to recent collaboration with ALGADE french firm, DOSIRAD can also propose closed radon measurement with DPR2 ALGADE Shape, with a last 2010 successful test in PTB radon Chamber.  Picture and other data are available on www.algade.com. Please, ask us for details.

The DOSIFILM can also be used in "personalised" cases, imagined by our customers, with our help. Two personalised "open cases" are already used, in England and Italy. On the other hand, we are able to use the DOSIFILM films in any kind of traditional or experimental closed cases. A very successful Intercomparison has been done in the so-called "Karlsruhe cases". Regarding the films analyses, all the open cases have the same calibration factor, while each "closed case" has its own calibration factor. Please, ask us.

General information :

According to our knowledge, a single measure with our "opened" KODALPHA gives the best overall assessment of the health risk. It is simply because the health risk comes from the progenies and not from the gas, while the closed detectors take only care of the gas. More that 95% of the time, a closed and an open detectors give exactly the same result, because "EF" is closed to 0.40 (as supposed by the legislation) and there is no thoron. But, under certain circumstances, a closed detector can underestimate the risk by a factor 2. After a general risk detection in a building, with a KODALPHA, the complementary measures, of any kinds, ought to be in charge of discovering the precise causes of this health risk (radon, equilibrium Factor, thoron, etc.).

For general information about "radon gas", "natural health risks", "radon measurements", etc. please click on info radon. This provides a short extract from an excellent WHO (World Health Organisation) information pamphlet, about radon. To buy these pamphlets, please, have a look to the WHO site, at the WHO address. On the web, the research motors would also give you many, too many, information. Take care to chose the best key words !   We suggest :  LR115 film, radon dosimeters, KODALPHA, thoron, equilibrium factor, radon progenies, &, and all good web sites of the administration, &

Business : since only our laboratory is in charge of all the films analyses, any of our customers can easily start a radon business, with good prices, without accreditation problems and without local investment.

By the way, we are still looking for new KODALPHA distributors and professional's users of KODALPHA and DOSIFILM all over the world.

The picture on the right below, is the optical equipment used to count the microscopic tracks left on the film's surface, following impacts of alpha particles. These impacts become visible after a film processing (etching process) in a soda solution.
Before July 2010 and its move to south of France, DOSIRAD was located at 20km from Paris,
in the East suburbs. Its new address is given here below.
Just above the microscope, you can see the 16 million pixels CCD camera, used for track counting of 1 cm², in a single pass.

(This counting equipment is the only one shown on the WHO radon pamphlet (see the above WHO address)
